3 Tips For Staying Safe During Your Beach Vacation

While taking a beach vacation can be a great way to relax and unwind in a calm and tranquil environment, playing at the beach can also open you up to some potentially very dangerous situations that you’ll want to avoid.

So to help ensure that you and your loved ones are able to have an enjoyable time on your trip without having to worry about harm or accident befalling you, here are three tips for staying safe during your beach vacation

Be Smart With Your Car

Before you even make it to the beach, it’s important that you’ve made the right decisions regarding how to get there and what to bring with you. According to Robert Curley, a contributor to Trip Savvy, you should never leave valuables in your car when you’re visiting any beaches. With valuables left in your car, you could become the target of a break-in. So when you’re packing up your vehicle, make sure you only bring the items that you’ll actually be taking to the beach with you.

Additionally, as you’re packing all your gear into your car, do your best to safely and properly stow all of your items. Certain pieces of beach gear, like umbrellas, could be very dangerous to you and the passengers in your car if you were to get in a car accident and those items were to become projectiles.

Take Advantage Of Lifeguards On Duty

Because swimming at the beach can be very dangerous, it’s a good idea to take advantage of all safety precautions afforded to you, including staying close to lifeguards on duty.

According to the United States Lifesaving Association, your chances are drowning when at the beach are five times higher if you’re swimming in an area that’s far from a lifeguard tower. With this in mind, try to find a place to swim and play where you can be near a lifeguard who could save you if need be. Also, it’s a good idea to speak with the lifeguard on duty before you get in the water so you can be given any information about currents, wildlife, or other ocean conditions.

Keep Your Drinking To A Minimum

Although your beach vacation may seem like the perfect time to kick back with a cold one, it can be very unsafe to indulge in drinking while you’re at the beach.

According to the editors of Reader’s Digest and TheHealthy.com, not only does alcohol impair your judgment if you’re in the water, but it also increases your chances of becoming dehydrated. Under the effects of dehydration and the intense heat of the sun, it can be easy to get heatstroke or sunstroke if you’re not careful.

If you’re planning to take a beach vacation soon, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you stay safe during your trip.
