Ocean Beach sandcastle contest rescheduled for November 9

LEAP sandcastle contest sculpture on Ocean BeachThe LEAP Sandcastle Contest is back on the calendar for Ocean Beach, after the end of the federal shutdown cleared the way for organizers to reschedule the annual San Francisco event.

In a statement sent to the media Wednesday, the LEAP nonprofit organization announced its 30th annual sandcastle contest will now be held Saturday, Nov. 9.

Originally scheduled for the middle of October, the contest was one of many casualties of the federal shutdown. With the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the branch of the National Park Service that oversees Ocean Beach, offline, organizers said earlier that the event was postponed indefinitely.

“We are thrilled to have the event back on track,” LEAP  Executive Director Julie McDonald stated in the announcement.

LEAP provides arts enrichment programs in more than 30 Bay Area schools, according to the group.
