Kaiser Half Marathon and 5K neighborhood survival guide
The 30th annual Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon and 5K Fun Run is coming to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and the Great Highway Sunday, Feb. 3.
That means not only a crowd of runners and onlookers, but also street closures, traffic and parking disruptions. Here’s what you need to know about how the Kaiser Half Marathon will affect the Ocean Beach neighborhood.
Kaiser Half Marathon timing and course
Both races start at 8 a.m. Sunday. Most participants will be done in three hours or less, but anyone still at it will have to move to adjacent running paths after 11 a.m.
The 5K run is actually 3.2 miles long so that 5K and marathon runners can share start and finish lines. The 5K course is entirely contained within Golden Gate Park, starting at John F. Kennedy Drive east of Stow Lake and finishing on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive near the Great Highway.
The half-marathon start and finish are at the same place as the 5K, but the 13.1-mile course exits Golden Gate Park at the west end of JFK Drive, heads south along the Great Highway to a point west of the San Francisco Zoo south of Sloat Boulevard, and loops back north along the Great Highway to re-enter the park at JFK Drive.
Kaiser Half Marathon and 5K race results will be available online.
Kaiser Half Marathon traffic, parking and transit disruptions
The Great Highway will be closed until at least 11 a.m., and likely longer. Some parking will be restricted on Lower Great Highway near Lincoln Way, plus inside the park and in the main Ocean Beach parking lot across from the park.
