SFPD starA man was attacked in Stern Grove on Friday, suffering head injuries so severe they threatened his life.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded at about 10:20 p.m. that night to a call about Stern Grove near 21st Avenue and Sloat Boulevard. When they arrived they found a 19-year-old man suffering from head trauma. He was transported to a hospital for his injuries.

The victim told police that he and a friend were hanging out at the Grove and tried to join a “party,” SFPD Officer Albie Esparza stated in an email to the Ocean Beach Bulletin. The man was attacked by four people in the party, including one who headbutted him, but he didn’t have any information about the suspects.

Esparza stated he didn’t know who called police about the incident, but it was first reported as a fight.

No information about suspects was available from police, but Esparza said the incident is considered to be under active investigation.

Stern Grove has been a popular neighborhood spot for underage drinking and other activities for decades, sometimes hosting impromptu gatherings of dozens of people.
