California Coastal Cleanup Day is Saturday, and volunteers at Ocean Beach will join others throughout the state to pick up trash, do yoga and shop at a “green market.”
Ocean Beach is the main volunteer drop-in site for all of Northern California, with activities centered around Stairwell 17 at the main Ocean Beach parking lot across from the Beach Chalet and Golden Gate Park. About 1,000 people are expected to participate, according to the California Coastal Commission.
A sunrise yoga session kicks off the events at Ocean Beach starting at 8 a.m., and then at 9 a.m. the cleanup will begin and will run through noon. Some vendors from Whole Foods Market will host what organizers are calling a “green market” on the beach during the Cleanup.
Waste company Recology and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy will pass out buckets and reusable bag. Organizers also have asked volunteers to bring their own bucket, bags and gloves if they have them, to reduce the waste produced by the cleanup event itself.
