Bay to Breakers neighborhood survival guide

Bay to Breakers 2012On Sunday, thousands of people will take part in the 101st Bay to Breakers footrace, a beloved San Francisco tradition that mixes athleticism with exuberant fun— plus disruptions to traffic, parking and transit. Here’s the information you need to survive Bay to Breakers in your neighborhood.

In addition to closed streets, no-parking zones and jumbled Muni service, heavy drinking and the associated a grab bag of misbehavior in past years have produced complaints from people who live along the Bay to Breakers course and near the finish line. Alcohol is officially banned on the 12-kilometer (7.46 miles) Bay to Breakers course, and both organizers and San Francisco police say they won’t tolerate kegs, glass containers or public drunkenness. “Anyone publicly drinking or displaying public drunkenness on or along the race course will be subject to fines and prosecution,” the Bay to Breakers website states.

Bay to Breakers course map 2012Like last year, the Bay to Breakers race starts near the Embarcadero at 7 a.m., earlier than in years before 2011. No floats, or wheeled carts or vehicles will be allowed.

The Great Highway will be closed between Sloat Boulevard and Fulton Street, starting Saturday at 9 p.m. and ending Sunday at 2 p.m., so Bay to Breakers organizers can set up the finish line on the Great Highway across from Golden Gate Park. Local access for the Beach Chalet will still be open, via the Great Highway and Fulton Street.

Bay to Breakers traffic and Muni impacts

The SFMTA pages dedicated to traffic and parking updates didn’t contain any information about the street closures and temporary no-parking zones associated with Bay to Breakers as of Saturday afternoon. But race organizers listed street closures, which also are no-parking tow zones:

  1. I have to go to a business meeting downtown on Sunday, unfortunately. When it says street closures, that just means for drivers, right? I’m not going to have to walk around the entire race to get to my meeting, am I?

I used to live near the end of the Bay to Breakers and we just used to rent movies and stay indoors through the weekend. Couldn’t get parking in our neighborhood normally. It was worse with events going on. And try to drive through all the people and they act like they never have to follow any basic laws or, heck, even exhibit common sense (like don’t jump in front of a car that has a green light….).

    Sigh.

  2. I think that I can sum up the Survival Guide in two words “STAY HOME”.
