Inside the new Lands End Lookout above Sutro Baths
San Francisco’s new Lands End Lookout, a gift shop, cafe and interpretive center perched above the ruins of Sutro Baths in the Outer Richmond, officially opens to the public Saturday.
But although construction fences are still up and some details of the building are still being put in place, the Lookout actually has been open for business for about a week. The Ocean Beach Bulletin visited April 24, and here is some of what we found.
For more information about Saturday’s opening, visit the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy.

This place is fantastic. I’m so happy they finally put a public “quick stop” cafe at the beach. “Gee I wonder if a coffee shop would be popular here? ” Ya’ think? It’s nice that they created an alternative the former public areas down at the Cliff house that have become fancy restaurants and a gift shop. Now there are clean restrooms and places to relax with beautiful, easily accessible trails. SO many people on the weekends the trails feel safe for my family and never creepy or empty. And so perfect for dogs too…our terrier needs lots of walks and most of the trails are wide enough to give all the dogs room to feel comfortable. This is the best use of public space I’ve seen in years. We finally have a place to go in the city that has nature, exercise, dogs and coffee together!
What a colossal waste of money. I an era where the state the city and the federal governments are screwing us with higher taxes, exorbitant infraction fees (such as 250.00 parking tickets), we have to endure this colossal waste of money???
granted, part of it was from donations, but surely the state will eventually deal with the upkeep, the expansions, and the rest….
can’t people look at the ocean from the ocean?
ridiculous…
