Warren Hellman tribute concert in pictures

Sunday’s memorial concert for Warren Hellman, the San Francisco financier who underwrote the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass music festival and died in December, drew thousands to people to Ocean Beach.

People from all over San Francisco, the Bay Area and beyond came to remember the Hellman’s musical legacy and spend the day in the spirit of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.

Musicians including Emmylou Harris, Boz Scaggs, John Doe, the Dry Branch Fire Squad, the Wronglers, Robert Earl Keen, Buddy Miller and Gillian Welch performed at the tribute show.

  1. This was a thoughtful event. It would be helpful to know what type of permits were secured/issued and what fees were paid. When events are held in GG Park the fee monies are used to maintain GG Park. With the near weekly/constant events happening at the beach, it would be a terrible shame if those fees were just disappearing into the City general fund budgets, or worse, into the Parks and Rec. Dept. (which then uses the $$ to torture us with proposals for giant lighted soccer fields….)

The point is that the millions of dollars being raised from the ‘selling’ of Ocean Beach should be used to clean up the illegal dumping of rocks, rebar and old sidewalk debris from the South of Sloat Ave. area. That unpermitted mess needs to be removed and cleaned up, and event funds would be a perfect source of revenue for that purpose.

  2. Kristine, thanks for not only taking a great shot, but capturing a wonderful moment for us with a very special feeling. Adding our words to it makes this a special keepsake.

As for the event itself, it was a terrific tribute to Warren, and so much lower-key than the full blown HSB event has gotten. I really enjoyed it that much more.
