Sunset District concert shines light on after-school programs
Thursday night, Ulloa Elementary School will host a concert by virtuoso Chinese flutist Geng Tao and performances by children’s dance and music groups, all part of an effort to highlight the importance of after-school programs.
The free event from 7-9 p.m. has been put together by the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center, a non-profit organization that provides classes and activities for children and adults in the Sunset District. The concert at Ulloa Elementary is just one of many Lights On Afterschool events this week in 7,500 communities nationwide, according to SNBC.
“Proposed federal funding cuts would force the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center to significantly
scale back after-school learning opportunities for hundreds of San Francisco school children,” SNBC director Michael Funk said in a prepared statement. “We hope the concert will help the public to better understand and appreciate the importance of the work we do.”
Funk is scheduled to speak at the event, talking about SNBC’s programs and their impact on the community.
Ulloa Elementary School is at 2650 42nd Ave., at Vicente Street.
