USS San Francisco Memorial Ceremony in Photos
About 200 people gathered to honor the 100 sailors and seven marines who were killed in action during the Battle of Guadalcanal on Sunday, May 29 at the USS San Francisco Memorial Ceremony.
The Chair of Honor was dedicated to Joseph Whitt, a retired member of the U.S. Navy and a member of the crew of the USS San Francisco. Whitt served in the Navy from January 1941 until November 1946 — aboard the USS Frisco, as the ship was affectionately called, for three of those years. According to a brief biography on Whitt provided at the event, Whitt “was one of the few who actually heard the first and last shots of World War II fired,” and was a part of some of the most significant battles of the war, including Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.
Other featured guests at the ceremony, held at the USS San Francisco Memorial at Lands End, included military historian James Hornfischer and state Sen. Leland Yee.
