Observe Memorial Day at USS San Francisco Memorial Park

Sunday, May 29 brings the annual Memorial Day remembrance ceremony at the USS San Francisco Memorial at Lands End — this year at the newly redesigned and named USS San Francisco Memorial Park.

In the past year the memorial saw a $3 million overhaul, and this year’s celebration heralds a significant upgrade in the park. Seating for 500 will be available for the free event, and many decorated members of the military will attend, as will state Sen. Leland Yee.

The USS San Francisco was one of the most storied naval vessels in American military history, and saw action in World War II at the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway and the Battle of Guadalcanal.

The USS San Francisco Memorial Park is at Lincoln Park and Lands End, near Point Lobos on Merrie Way. Ceremonies begin at noon. The featured speaker for this year’s celebration is James Hornfischer, the author of “Neptune’s Inferno: The US Navy at Guadalcanal.”

Picture of the USS San Francisco sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge is from December 11, 1942, and is from the Wikimedia Commons.
