On May 17, District 4 Supervisor Carmen Chu recognized Marc and Vicki Duffett, proprietors of the Ocean Park Motel, as part of the Small Business Week award ceremony at City Hall. The honor comes just in time for the motel’s 75th anniversary celebration. Here are the complete remarks of the comments made by Supervisor Chu:

Marc and Vicki have been the proprietors of the Ocean Park Motel, located at 2690 46th Ave. in the Sunset District, since 1977. The Ocean Park Motel is noteworthy in that it was the first motel in San Francisco, opening in April of 1937, just in time for the Golden Gate Bridge opening festivities.  During those days, Ocean Beach was San Francisco’s playground, and the Ocean Park Motel was beachfront property.

The Ocean Park Motel is an architectural gem, built in a nautical theme with style and craftsmanship not seen much these days. Marc and Vicki have been dedicated to preserving the motel’s character and style, and in 1987 were recognized by the Art Deco Society with a special award for their careful preservation of this Streamline Moderne beauty.

With recent rave reviews of the Sunset District’s many cultural, gastronomical, retail and natural resources, in publications ranging from the New York Times to Sunset Magazine, the Ocean Park Motel is sure to be as busy as ever.  So book your San Francisco summer stay-cation now.  I’m sure Marc and Vicki will be glad to accommodate you.
