Fort Funston body confirmed to be that of man missing in boating mishap
A body found at Fort Funston has been confirmed to be that of a man who disappeared off Ocean Beach April 9.
The San Francisco Examiner reports that the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body found Saturday to be that of 53-year-old Roger Christiansen of Marin County.
Saturday morning, a dog walker discovered the body in about one to two feet of water near a drainage pipe at Fort Funston, just south of Ocean Beach, according to the U.S. Park Service.
Christiansen and another man were aboard a tugboat that started taking on water off Ocean Beach April 9. They were returning from Pacifica, where they had gone seeking a lost skiff.
Christiansen and his companion fled the tug for an inflatable boat, but that craft too struggled in heavy surf and high winds. Kitesurfers at Ocean Beach went to the aid of the men, but Christiansen, who was in the boat, sent them after the other man. When the kitesurfers returned to the inflatable boat, Christiansen was gone.
The Coast Guard searched for Christiansen for hours, finally calling off their efforts shortly after midnight April 10.
Authorities recovered a life jacket and the inflatable boat, which was partly collapsed.
