Hello, Judah!

Hello, Judah! I've walked on Judah Street before, but haven't had the time to enjoy the local establishments. So today's walk was short, but full of shopping and snacking inside the neighborhood stores and restaurants.

Hi. My name is Allison and I am a recent transplant from the Florida Keys, a chain of tiny islands that has one main, stick-straight road, and the impossibility of getting lost. After moving to San Francisco in 2008 and getting lost for the umpteenth time, I made it a goal to walk every street to get my bearings in this hilly, twisted town. After 12 months of steady plodding, I am about 400 miles into the journey. To keep track of where I’ve been, I keep a blog, http://allisonwalkssf.com.

  2. Welcome to the neighborhood! what a surprise. they may not remember, but my parents use to run “The French Dry Cleaners” what is now the fornt door of Celia’s #1. Our small family of five lived upstairs in the one bedroom flat from 1953-1959. we move to 47th Avenue in 1959 where my mom still lives today. The Cleaners officially closed in 1975 and Celia’s expanded into the cleaners and old T.V. shop on the other side. I remember the restaurant when it was a little hole in the wall eatery. The Sunset is a marvelous place to grow up. One really never leaves. if you ever get a chance to entrench yourself, you’ll know why. as for being lost … not in this part of town. by address number alone, anyone can tell you which 2 streets you live on. they can tell you what number sequence your house is by the intersection. Judah Street has changed in ways only a true resident can understand. As I remember, it was a largely white neighborhood with the slightest smattering of ethnicity. now it’s 90 percent Asian, just like Chinatown used to be. Ahhh … but the sixties! There was a generation!

  3. Thank you, ladies! I’m excited by how many really cute shops and restaurants are strung along Judah and Irving. I’m jealous of the people that get to live right around there.

  4. Hi Allison– I can’t see the other comment, but yes– we were there on Cinco de Mayo, and they did have a mariachi band :)

Also, next time you’re in that block of Judah, eat at Wo’s, the little hole-in-the-wall next door to Celia’s. Best place around! Neighborhood denizens were desperate last month when the husband-wife team went back to Hong Kong to visit family. Now they’re back and all’s well.
