A New Christmas Tree Lot on the Great Highway

Marty Magnusen and Dan Dufficy, local residents and long-time Ocean Beach surfers, have opened a Christmas-tree lot at Moraga Street and the Great Highway, named “Gu’s Christmas Tree Lot” after Marty’s dog Gu.

The lot had its official opening on Friday, Nov. 27, with lights, an inflatable Santa and a bonfire to kick off the holiday season.

“We had about 30 people here for the opening, friends of ours that we’ve surfed with for years, and you could really feel the Christmas spirit,” Marty said the day after the opening.

“We’re lucky. We have a lot of really talented and artistic friends who are willing to help support our lot, and helped create a community spirit for the opening.”

For the opening, surfer and artist Ian Ross painted a mural on a tarp, which was unfortunately ruined by rain later in the evening. Andy Olive, another local surfer and a teacher at the Sunset Co-op Nursery School who helps run San Franpsycho, a local fashion company, sold T-shirts at the opening.

The vacant lot is adjacent to where Marty lives with his girlfriend, Alexis Davies, who created a partnership with a local branch of the SPCA. Marty and Alexis adopted Gu through the SPCA, and are donating to the SPCA a portion of their profits. They also plan to host a puppy adoption at Gu’s Lot the weekend of Dec. 4.

“Next weekend we’re going to have hot chocolate and cookies for sale courtesy of our neighbors, Ian Ross will be working on another mural, San Franpsycho will be here to sell T-shirts and screen a movie on our wall, there’s going to be puppies for adoption, and of course there are Christmas trees for sale,” Alexis reported about the upcoming weekend plans.

Marty, a lifeguard at Ocean Beach, has been eager to explore a local business opportunity during his off-season. Dan works as a landscaper with connections in Oregon, and a Christmas tree lot seemed like the perfect opportunity.

“A lot of people doubted if we could pull this off, but we’re here and fired up about it,” Marty said.
