Appeal hearing tonight for Taraval pot permit

marijuanaA church and a tutoring service opposed to a city permit granted to a medical-marijuana dispensary planned for Taraval Street take their cases to the Board of Appeals Wednesday night. Chinese Gospel Church — which operates next door to the site — and Canaan Tutoring Center Service both appealed the permit granted to Greg Schoepp to alter the building at 2139 Taraval St. as part of his bid to open a medical cannabis dispensary at the former site of a chiropractor’s office.

The Board of Appeals hearing starts at 5 p.m. in Room 416 at City Hall. Several brief items occupy the start of the board’s agenda, but the appeals of Schoepp’s permit will be combined as the first substantive item — which means that anyone who wants to comment on the appeals will have to arrive early.

In May, the Planning Commission approved the plan to open the dispensary following the testimony of more than 100 people at an hours-long meeting. The approval came as a surprise to many neighborhood residents. Supervisor Carmen Chu, whose District 4 includes the site of the proposed dispensary, told the San Francisco Chronicle at the time, “The many people who came out from the neighborhood (to complain) are those who would be most affected. But the Planning Commission didn’t seem to listen to them.”
