Susan Suval – Weaving and Surfboard Shaping, an Ocean Beach Recollection.
We have our first ever Ocean Beach Recollection! Thanks to Susan Suval, the Chair of the Sunset Neighborhood District Coalition and the Coordinator for the Sunset Community Festival, for her poignant memory.
“I lived on the Great Highway for over 30 years. One of my fondest memories is watching next door neighbor Bill Hickey (of SF Surf Shop, click here to read about his history of shaping boards) shape and finish his boards. He would listen to piano music as he worked – another benefit on days like today when all doors were open. I was weaving at the time and on occasion would glance up from my loom and see that we were independently working with the same colors–cool!”
Remember, you too can submit an Ocean Beach Recollection. Learn how to by reading this post, and submit by going here.

My favorite recollection is my first run through Golden Gate Park. After glancing at my tourist map, I thought it was a short jog from the Haight to the Pacific. I just started running west thinking at any moment the Pacific would rise to meet me. Nope, past the museums, the ponds, the buffalo! (say why?) I finally rounded past the windmill. Took a quick glance and turned for home chased by the fog and wind. A perfect welcome to the city.
Growing-up in SF throughout the 50′s, I was always mesmerized by Jack O’neill’s SURF SHOP on the GH, down by Sloat. I knew surfing was for me. I eventually got my first surfboard there. Does anyone have a photo of that Surf Shop you could pass on as a digital copy on for my surfing-sentimental collection? I have had no success finding such a photo on the internet. Thank you much!
It sounds like such a peaceful time…beautiful story.
